Asbestos Material Sampling & Analysis

Asbestos bulk sampling involves taking physical samples from suspected materials for laboratory analysis. Learn how sampling works and who can carry it out.

What Is Asbestos Material Sampling?

Asbestos bulk sampling involves taking a small physical sample from a suspect material — such as a ceiling tile, floor tile, pipe insulation, or textured coating — and sending it to a UKAS-accredited laboratory for analysis. The lab uses a combination of microscopy techniques to confirm whether asbestos is present and, if so, which fibre type.

Sampling is the only reliable way to confirm or rule out asbestos. Visual inspection alone cannot determine whether a material contains asbestos.

Who Can Take Samples?

Bulk sampling must be carried out by a UKAS-accredited inspector. Taking samples yourself is not recommended and is potentially dangerous — disturbing asbestos without proper controls can release fibres. Laboratories will only accept samples taken as part of a formal survey from an accredited body. DIY sampling kits sold online do not produce legally recognised results.

Laboratory Analysis Methods

MethodUseNotes
PLM (Polarised Light Microscopy)Identify fibre typeStandard method for bulk samples
PCM (Phase Contrast Microscopy)Count fibres in air samplesUsed for air testing
TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy)Detect very fine fibresHigher sensitivity; used in disputes
SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy)Detailed fibre characterisationUsed in specialist cases
